New Jobs in Dallas Area Help Lower Unemployment Rate

Don’t you just love hearing news stories about cities that are slowly but surely recovering from recession? There are not enough of them, unfortunately, but they are there, and Dallas is no exception.

Payrolls have now expanded in the Dallas area for seven straight months in a row, with another .1% drop in unemployment and nearly 33,000 jobs added in April alone. Transportation, utilities, and retail industries seemed to show the most growth—while other industries, such as construction and manufacturing, still have some catching up to do.

Other areas that indicated job growth include mining, oil drilling, education, health services, logging, and gas extraction.

Dallas Jobs Improving by the Numbers

In the month of January, there are clear improvements notable for the number of jobs employers are offering in the city of Dallas. Dallas is growing especially in the areas of high tech careers. The most recent information out there indicates that the number of jobs in Texas is up by 67,200 workers for the month, which is a sizable gain for the area. This is the 21 straight month that Dallas has seen improvements in the job market in terms of job growth. According to reports, the state's unemployment rate is down to the lowest rate it has been at since April of 2009.In the Dallas Forth Worth Metro area, the number of jobs is also up. The current unemployment rate for the city metro area is 7.4 percent right now, but that is not seasonally adjusted like other numbers are. In January of 2011, the Dallas Forth Worth Metro area has an unemployment rate of 8.3 percent.

In many instances, there are employers who have amped up the hiring and are now putting more towards economic recovery. Others are not. Dallas Job Market Could Take Hit From American Airlines

American Airlines is the latest of the airline companies to announce cost-cutting methods to boost their numbers. The parent company of the airliner wants to shed some 13,000 jobs. That amounts to about 15 percent of its entire workforce nationwide. The goal for the company is to give itself a fighting chance as it pulls out of bankruptcy protection in the coming months. Shedding Jobs Fast In order to pull itself out of bankruptcy, American Airlines must find a way to reduce labor costs by as much as 20 percent. The company, which is the third largest in the United States, will begin working with its three unions to find where jobs will be cut. No specific positions were announced but the company did say it plans to slash worker and management jobs.
